Biography
Dr. Rory O'Hanlon was born in Dublin and educated at Mullaghbawn National School Armagh, St. Mary's College, Dundalk, Blackrock College, Dublin and University College Dublin (MB, B.Ch, BAO, Dch, LM).
He is married to Teresa Ward and they have four sons, Rory, Ardal, Neale and Shane and two daughters, Fiona and Dearbhla. Dr. O'Hanlon first came to Carrickmacross as the local General Practitioner in the town. He was the Medical Representative on the North Eastern Health Board from its inception in 1970 to 1987.
Dr. O'Hanlon contested the by-election in 1973 but was unsuccessful. In 1977 he contested the General Election and was elected to Dail Eireann for the constituency of Cavan / Monaghan. He has been elected at every subsequent election since.
Dr. O'Hanlon was Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Welfare in 1982. After the election in February 1983, he was appointed Fianna Fail Spokesperson on Health and remained in the position until 1987. From 1987 - 1991 he served as Minister for Health before being appointed Minister for the Environment.
In 1995 Dr. O'Hanlon was appointed as Chairman of the Fianna Fail Parliamentary Party and remained in the position until 2002. In 1997 he was appointed as Leas Cheann Comhairle of Dail Eireann and he also served as Vice-Chairman of the British Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body.
Dr. O'Hanlon was nominated Ceann Comhairle, or Speaker, of Dail Eireann by Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern T.D. and elected same by the Members of the 29th Dail in 2002. He remained in this position until 2007.
Dr. O'Hanlon is now the Vice-Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and sits on the Health Committee and the British Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body. He is leader of the Irish delegation to the Western European Union and serves on the Committee on Procedure and Privileges as well as the Informal Feedback Forum. In 2007 Dr. O'Hanlon was also elected as Vice-Chair of the Fianna Fail Northern Ireland Strategy Group whose aim is to take Fianna Fail into the North.
